Golden Globes Nominations 2023—Primetime TV Hasn’t Been Forgotten… Completely

The Golden Globes Nominations have been announced, and while there’s plenty to celebrate, there’s also a fair share of snubs that has the people talking.
The Banshees of Inisherin leads the way with a total of 8 nominations, followed by Everything Everywhere All at Once followed with six.
Abbott Elementary is the leader for TV, scoring five noms along with best actress in a TV series (musical/comedy) for Quinta Brunson and Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph up against each other for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical-Comedy or Drama Television Series. And in a much-deserved surprise for another primetime TV series, Hilary Swank also scored a nomination for Alaska Daily.
Knives Out: A Glass Onion mystery hasn’t even hit Netflix yet—it was only available for a limited theatrical run thus far—yet Daniel Craig has already snagged Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), while the film itself was nominated as a Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy).

The Biggest Snubs and Surprises of the 2021 Golden Globe Nominations

Like any other awards show, there’s always bound to be things that are left out, as well as things that somehow got in, and this year is no different. Below, I’ve made my personal list of some of the surprises and snubs that missed out on this years Golden Globe awards.
Surprise: Music
When they announced this was nominated for Best Motion Picture-Comedy or Musical, as well as Best Actress for Kate Hudson, I had no idea what that was. After looking it up, I discovered it was a movie written and directed by Sia (yes, THAT Sia), that has come under fire amid controversy about how the autistic community is treated in the film. Sia has gone as far as deactivating her Twitter account because of the backlash. It’s pretty shocking that this would find its way into the shortlist when there’s a dark cloud hanging over it.
Snub: Spike Lee and Delroy Lindo
Spike Lee’s latest film, Da 5 Bloods, and its leading star Delroy Lindo were both left out on nomination morning. Arguably one of my favorite movies of the year, it’s incredibly shocking that it didn’t even get a Best Motion Picture nomination, let alone a Best Actor nom for Lindo. While the Globes have nominated Spike Lee in the past, leaving one of his actors out is always a snub on a groundbreaking film like this one.
Surprise: Emily in Paris
Netflix’s fan-favorite show grabbed a few nominations for the Comedy categories on the TV side. This was so surprising that even some of the writers on the show have openly expressed how surprised they were about getting some love from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Surprise/Snub: James Corden, but no Meryl??
Ryan Murphy’s The Prom was a shoo-in to get a nomination for Motion Picture-Comedy or Musical, and the great Meryl Streep was definitely going to get a nomination as well. When the nominations were revealed, she wasn’t there, but her co-star James Corden was. Corden polarized critics for his performance in this film and how he might not have been the best choice (I personally agree), so to see him get in over Meryl Streep, who had the best performance in that movie, was certainly a shock.
Snub: I May Destroy You
HBO’s series created, written, produced, and starring Michaela Coel got absolutely no love at this year’s ceremony, sparking loads of controversy of nominating longtime shows, and forgetting newer, more groundbreaking ones. I May Destroy You has been incredibly well-received, with some calling it one of the best new shows of the year, lauding its performances, diverse cast, and introspective look at race, sexuality, and social media. The Globes love to award things that are newer, and leaving this one out was incredibly disappointing.
Pleasant Surprise: Women Directors!
This year, the Globes nominated not one, not two, but THREE women for Best Director: Emerald Fennell, Regina King, and Chloé Zhao. This is the first time ever that the category has been a majority of women, and the last time a woman was even seen in this category was in 2014 for Ava DuVernay’s Selma. I love seeing that the Globes are selecting these women, and I hope one of them gets rewarded on February 28th.
Snub: Pedro Pascal
This one’s a little more of a personal one, but I really think that Pedro Pascal needs some recognition for The Mandalorian. He brings a wonderful performance to the masked bounty hunter, and I hope he can get a nomination under his belt in the future.
Surprise: Ratched
Ryan Murphy’s prequel on the infamous Nurse Ratched grabbed a Best Drama Series, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress on yesterday’s nominations. The show wasn’t the greatest thing I’ve ever seen, so seeing it show up a few times was a little surprising, but the Globes love Ryan Murphy, so they will keep giving him nominations from now until the end of time.
Snub: Black-Lead Ensembles
All of the Motion Picture-Drama nominees are predominantly white, when there have been some spectacular films with Black-lead ensembles, like Da 5 Bloods, One Night in Miami, Judas and the Black Messiah, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Not to discredit the ones that were nominated, but the films mentioned are spectacular and deserve recognition for the whole movie, not just for the acting. It would’ve been nice to see those films get nominated for the top honor, but hopefully they’ll slide their way in for the Oscars in a couple months.
Are there any nominations that shocked you? What do you think should have been nominated that didn’t? Leave a comment below.
The Golden Globes air on NBC February 28th, hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
