Grey’s Anatomy-“Take It Back” (10×13)

Published

on

SANDRA OH, ELLEN POMPEO, JESSICA CAPSHAW, SARAH DREW, NICOLE CUMMINS, JUSTIN BRUENING

I’ve been a loyal fan to Grey’s Anatomy since season 1, and I’m still surprised at how hooked I am almost 10 years later. Finally Grey’s came back to my Thursday night, and it delivered. We were left at the alter of April and Matthews wedding, and Jackson interrupting the ceremony confessing his love to her. So who did she choose?

JAPRIL is a thing now

She chose JACKSON!! But we don’t know that initially at first. The opening scene shows April and Jackson running to his car, leaving the ceremony behind them. She then realizes the decision she made, and asks Jackson to stop the car all together. She can’t believe what she just done, and is having second thoughts. Fast forward two weeks and we see Jackson and April avoiding each other at work, and how hard Stephanie is taking her boyfriend publicly humiliating her. It looks like Jackson and April didn’t make it, but we then flash back to there decision of getting married and keeping it a secret at work. As much as I don’t like them together, they are pretty darn cute.

Derrick & The President

On the season finale, we saw that the President of the United States called Derrick himself, but we didn’t know what the reasoning was. Basically the government is interested in Derricks brain mapping trial, and would like him to continue working on it for them. Heres the problem, he promised Mer he would stop so she could focus on work. So Mer is pissed at Derrick, which is good because she and Christina are friends again. But when Derrick mets with POTUS, the government agency interested in his research, they find out that he has been paying the family of the kid Derek played hockey with as a teenager who got hurt while they were playing, and is now in constant medical care because of the injuries he sustained.  It isn’t a problem, but they were curious about it. How perfect is he?

JUSTIN CHAMBERS, JAMES REMAR

Alex’s Daddy Issue

Since the beginning of Grey’s we’ve known Alex has had daddy issue since he was a kid. It was nice to see him reconnect with his dad, but since Shane nearly killed him in surgery, Alex feels that his time has been cut short. Jimmy is dying, and Alex is trying to cope with that. He nearly beats Shane to death, and even calls Jimmys Ex wife to come see him before he dies. But at the end Jimmy passes away, and you can tell it really hurts Alex to the core. Also Alex and Jo are engaged. But Jo didn’t remember that and wasn’t ready so it doesn’t count.

Arizona & Callie on the mend

Our favorite couple are actually working things out. In the beginning of the episode it looks like they were ready to call it quits, but with the flash forward we see they are actually buying a new house together. Basically Arizona wants a fresh start from the past, and doesn’t want to be reminded of all the negativity. Frankly I think she needs to get over it, but I’m happy they are finally happy.

The Board Meeting

At the end of the episode, all the members of the board are brought together due to HR filing a complaint. One of the surgical residents has lodged three separate complaints about sexual harassment and a hostile work environment. This leads HR to encourage a zero tolerance initiative that means all hospital relationships that don’t include pre-existing marriages should stop immediantly. How will this play out at a hospital that likes to work and play together? Only time will tell!

Grey’s Anatomy Has Overstayed Its Welcome

Published

With every season renewal beyond Season 14 that Grey’s Anatomy seems to nab miraculously, the great grandmother of all medical dramas has seriously overstayed its welcome.

And I promise I say this purely out of love as a superfan myself, as someone who has seen every episode, some more than once.

I hate to compare it to this but remember Season 5, Episode 19, when the great aunt continues to be revived, and the niece and nephews seem like monsters each time they hold their breath, hoping she’s gone for good? Well, Grey’s Anatomy is the great aunt in this scenario, and the fans are the children. There, I said it.

Numerous TV shows have ended much too early, but it’s a rarity for a show to have lasted beyond its expiration date. And while there’s no one reason the show has gone downhill, these are some of the factors I think contribute to its decline.

Shonda Rhimes Signs With Netflix

Many people don’t know this, but Shonda Rhimes, the original creator, and writer for the show exited and turned over her duties in 2017 when she decided to sign with Netflix.

She passed the showrunner title off to Krista Vernoff, who has been with Grey’s Anatomy since the beginning.

I’m not sure if I actually notice a difference in the writing, but it does seem like Rhimes’ exit in 2017 aligns similarly to when the show started to lose its steam.

Maybe it’s just a coincidence, but the show began recycling storylines, it lost important characters, and honestly, the drama between doctors began to go off the rails.

Original Characters are Replaced

The amount of times I’ve come across articles about Sandra Oh’s return is astounding. I’m not sure why everyone’s obsessed with theorizing her comeback. Oh has repeatedly said for years that she’s outgrown the show and will never return.

However, without Cristina, there was no hope for the show. Sure, Derek was Meredith’s true love, but Cristina was Meredith’s soul mate. So her exit was quite the blow, and I don’t think the show ever truly recovered.

Oh’s departure in Season 10 left only a sputter of decent seasons in its wake. Cristina was a bulk of the humor and comedic energy, and without her, it lost a huge piece of itself.

Every few seasons, the show introduces new interns. We’re used to that. But, once they were forced to replace attendings and original cast members like Cristina, Callie, Arizona, and Alex, it brought less desirable characters to the forefront.

Amelia, Teddy, Owen, and Maggie are currently the main four alongside Meredith. Originally they were side characters, only meant to add drama to the lives of the original cast. But as original members began to leave, their storylines began to evolve and steal the focus.

Amelia, the other Shepherd, replaced Derek, and Teddy replaced Cristina.

Excessive Drama

With an entirely new shift in perspective, the new doctor’s storylines overshadowed any exciting patient cases. While in the first few seasons, there was a striking balance between special medical cases and doctors’ personal lives.

There used to be a formula. Midway through each season, there would be a unique and interesting patient case (hysterical pregnancy, sex accidents, etc.), and then the season finale would end on a major event like a shooting or plane crash.

Now, it seems the only major news we’re left with is whether or not Amelia will finally find true love, commit, and tie the knot. Or, who’s going to have the next baby.

And don’t even get me started on how absent Meredith was for this latest season. Meredith has never been my favorite character, but that doesn’t change the fact that the show’s named after her, and she is the main focus of the show. So, when all we saw was her on the beach and in a hospital bed, it definitely felt like we were cheated.

The only good thing to come out of Meredith’s beach rendezvous were guest appearances from old cast members. Seeing Lexi, Mark, and Derek on the beach brought back deep nostalgia for how the show used to be.

As Season 18 is now in the works, I truly hope the show can end peacefully afterward. It’s been dragged on long enough, and it would be the first show I’d ever wave goodbye to willingly.

Please, end the show before it’s too late, so I no longer have to continue watching it out of loyalty.

Now, what do you think? Should the show end? Don’t forget to leave your thoughts down in the comments!

Grey’s Anatomy Review – Season Finale! (16×21)

Published

Grey's Anatomy - Put On A Happy Face 16x21

It may not have been a hospital shooting, a major fire, or an explosion, but it was certainly a Grey’s Anatomy season finale. A bittersweet one at that! It’s finally that time of year when we are left dangling on a very high cliffhanger with almost no end in sight.

The past episodes have left Richard’s health in danger, but the doctors finally figured out the cause of his mysterious symptoms.

Initially, everyone thought it was Alzheimer’s, but DeLuca caught it just in time. In fact, Richard was suffering from Cobolt poisoning as a result of an old hip replacement.

Meanwhile, Teddy and Owen’s wedding was scheduled for the end of the night but was halted indefinitely after Teddy left Owen an unfortunate voicemail.

In an installment that was certainly the lamest finale, it still left us with some major questions.

The entire hour was focused on Richard’s surgery and recovery from his new hip replacement after his old one failed him and essentially rotted in his body. I’m not sure how they expected us to focus on any of the other cases when all I wanted to do was focus on Richard’s status.

Oh, and also amidst the chaos, Link and Amelia welcomed their new baby boy into the world. What a day to be born little man!

Thankfully the episode ended on some happy notes for all patients involved. The little girl finally got her smile, the guy got the bat dislodged from his chest, and Richard seemed to make an easy recovery from his surgery.

However, there was certainly some strain left behind in a couple of relationships, to say the least. After Richard woke from his surgery Katherine was by his side ready to sleep next to him, but despite his previous delusions he remembered their old fights and didn’t seem to want anything to do with her.

I was hoping their relationship would be mended by this stressful time, but it was far from it. It’s understandable that Richard wouldn’t want anything to do with Katherine, but also she did run to his side during his most vulnerable time. Katherine was completely at fault for their latest blowup, but Richard knew Katherine was a hard woman. I hope they’re able to forgive each other because, at this point in life, they both deserve to have a companion by their side.

Well, Teddy majorly f-ed up. Koracick’s a good guy and deserves so much better. However, I had hoped that Teddy could have been exactly what he deserved.

I’m not sure why she kept messing around with him. She knew she didn’t want him, so how could she sleep with him and then proceed to tell him that was just her saying goodbye?

Owen’s not a saint either, so I’m not sure what’s going to transpire after this major incident, but I have a feeling things will eventually continue toward marriage. I’m putting my prediction in writing! Owen and Teddy will have a large rough patch, but will eventually take each other’s hands in marriage, even if it’s by the end of Season 17!

I’m not sure what will happen for Koracick because Teddy seemed like the woman for him, especially after he’s gone through so much life trauma. I hope the writers wrote him a happy ending with a lovely lady. Though, I will continue to secretly cross my fingers for a Teddy and Koracick miracle!

Anybody else with me??

On a small side note that only feels right because Meredith is the main character of the show, Meredith and DeLuca seem to be doing well? They’re not officially back together, but their trajectory seemed to be heading in that direction. Meredith was last seen taking DeLuca home, which I can only assume was back to her place. He was sobbing, and I really question if he’s going through a mania of sorts because he did lash out a few times. I’m not sure if he could attribute that to the fact that nobody would believe him and he had to take extra measures to ensure he was heard? However, I am curious if this will finally be addressed in the next season.

Let me know your thoughts on the season finale down below!

I guess this is ta-ta for now, until at least mid-September.

Additional Side Notes:

  • I had the same exact questions Amelia shouted! Why do we have babies? How does humanity exist?
  • That look shared between Jo and Hayes made me question if they’re going to become something! I guess I had never thought of Hayes pairing up with anyone except for Meredith, but things have been set up nicely so that Meredith will end up with DeLuca and Hayes isn’t left alone!
  • Maybe I’m not observant enough, but it seemed like Amelia didn’t really show a baby bump until this last episode before she went into labor!
  • I will always enjoy the subtle humor thrown into the drama and I’ve noticed a common trend, Bailey. Amelia demanding Bailey stay after she stole her baby daddy from taking the grunt of her squeezes was too precious. Bailey’s been there for many births on the show, so it only seemed right she be there for Amelia.
