Halloween
Hulu Kicks off ‘Huluween’: What to Stream this October
It’s that time of year for scary classics to bring some fright, and Hulu’s got you covered with its annual Huluween event. Here’s what you can stream for the month of October.
Beginning today, October 1, Hulu will feature 18 brand new Halloween shorts, some scary and some ridiculous. You can expect to see familiar faces including Troian Bellisario (Pretty Little Liars), Eric Robers, and Yalitza Aparicio (Roma). And the shorts will provide a platform for up-and-coming filmmakers.
Aside from the new, you will be able to stream spooktacular classics, including Rocky Horror Picture Show, alongside some premieres for movies like Censor (premiering 10/14), The Evil Next Door (premiering 10/21), and Gaia (premiering 10/22).
Additionally, Hulu’s curated a library of handpicked TV episodes and movies like “Humorous Horror,” “Frights for the Whole Family,” “Terrifying TV,” “Foreign Frights,” and many more.
From Hulu’s Initiative 29, Black filmmaker Philip Youman’s short film Voodoo will be released on October 29.
And if you’re located in the Los Angeles area, you’ll be able to reserve a spot on Tuesday, October 5 for an exclusive Drive-in late-night screening on Saturday, October 9.
Happy October and happy streaming!
Freeform announced the highly-anticipated 31 Nights of Halloween lineup on Aug. 29, but it was met with its fair share of backlash from the Instagram community.
While the annual schedule involves a rotating slate of Halloween classics that are fun for all ages, it also throws in a few newcomers each year to keep things fresh, which means that not every beloved film can make the cut.
While mainstays like Hocus Pocus, Nightmare Before Christmas, and Beetlejuice are present on the list, many fans questioned some of the decisions the network made when it came to other classics like Addams Family and Hotel Transylvania. Others were stumped by the inclusion of non-Halloween movies like Aladdin.
“Aladdin? What?!” one fan wrote, with someone else echoing, “The Incredibles? Despicable me? Cruella? What are these choices? Just because they dress up doesn’t make it a Halloween movie!?”
“No Hotel Transylvania and No Scooby Doo! Boooooooooooo!” a third noted, as someone else pointed out, “Where is sleepy hollow??”
The criticism continued: “Um spider-Man, Aladdin Muppets and despicable Me…but no Casper meets Wendy, corpse bride, sleepy hallow or others? Seriously who is in charge? ♀️” and “What is this “line up”…. Where are movies like Coraline, corpse bride, The witches, practical magic, double double toil and trouble, all of the Halloween town‘s not just one.., sleepy hollow.., THE ADDAMS FAMILY AND ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES, 9, All of the Hotel Transylvania, even the Munsters movie(s). The great pumpkin Charlie brown, literally any SCOOBY DOO, Plus sooooo many others that are child friendly.. this “Halloween” line up didn’t even try..”
Others took issue with Hocus Pocus and other films airing “nearly every day,” which limits the lineup.
The feedback wasn’t all negative, however, as someone praised the network for branching out from the typical choices, stating, “Ichabod and Mr toad, along with something wicked this way comes are some cool additions.”
“Cozy movie night planning happening now” and “Reasons to cozy up on the couch ” also rounded out the feedback.
You can check out the full lineup right here and decide for yourself!
This is Halloween… or, at the very least, the start of the fall season.
Halloween decor is popping up at major retailers nationwide, as coffee shops from coast to coast unleash the power of the pumpkin spice latte upon customers.
So it only makes sense that networks are gearing up for the spooky season by revealing their Halloween-themed lineups that fans look forward to every year.
One of those lineups includes Freeform’s 31 Nights of Halloween, which features fan-favorite movies like Halloweentown, Hocus Pocus, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Beetlejuice (before Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice hits theaters), and other timeless classics.
There’s something for everyone on the schedule to help you get into a spooktastic mood—so get ready to curl up on the couch with a cozy blanket, some popcorn, and some apple cider starting October 1 all the way through Halloween night.
